Guitar Resistance & Continuity Measurement Reference

Define resistance, continuity, open circuit, lead compensation, parallel loading, and passive-test limits.

Resistance
Opposition measured in ohms with the circuit disconnected and unpowered. A pickup DCR reading is not its frequency-dependent impedance or an output rating.
Continuity
A low-resistance path judged against the meter behavior and an explicit threshold. A beep alone does not identify which contacts are connected.
OL / open
No measurable path in the selected range. Record the meter display and range rather than substituting an arbitrary large number.
Lead resistance
The reading with probes shorted together. Subtract it from low-ohm cable and ground-path comparisons, never from an unrelated kΩ component claim without recording the method.
Parallel loading
In-circuit paths can reduce a reading. For two known parallel resistances, R = 1 / (1/R1 + 1/R2).
Contact map
A position-by-position record of closed lug pairs. It describes measured switch behavior, not a wiring recommendation.

Temperature, probe contact, control position, parallel components, auto-ranging delay, and meter resolution can change a reading. Repeat the test and preserve raw measurements. Follow the passive electronics measurement guide.

Never use resistance or continuity mode on an energized circuit. This reference excludes active electronics, amplifiers, power supplies, capacitors with stored charge, mains equipment, and insulation-safety testing.

Practical example

A 0.5 Ω cable path measured with 0.2 Ω shorted leads has about 0.3 Ω attributable to the tested path under that meter setup. By contrast, OL is a display state, not a very large number to enter into arithmetic, and pickup DCR is not AC impedance or output.
