What this tool is for

Compare knob attachment, bore, spline, and engagement with a measured pot shaft. Control hardware fit tools compare user-measured interfaces and envelopes. They do not treat metric, imperial, model, or instrument-family labels as dimensions and never authorize drilling, routing, or forced assembly.

Use it when you can describe the current state and need a defensible next check. It is not a shortcut around inspection: preserve the starting state, change one variable, and verify the result under the same conditions.

Before you begin

Remove a knob only with an appropriate puller or supported method. Record whether the knob uses a set screw or press fit, then measure the bore, shaft diameter, usable shaft height, insertion depth, shaft construction, and spline count from current documentation.

How the result should be read

Treat diameter, attachment method, spline, and engagement as separate gates. A pass does not establish skirt clearance, pointer orientation, rotational stop, or whether a set screw may bear safely on the entered shaft.

Read priorities from top to bottom, but stop as soon as new evidence contradicts an earlier assumption. Save or print the result ticket with the entered conditions so another person can reproduce the decision.

Method and logic

A set-screw interface compares bore-to-shaft diameter within the entered tolerance. A press-fit interface additionally requires a split shaft and matching known spline description. Engagement is the smaller of usable shaft height and knob insertion depth.

Worked example

A 6.35 mm set-screw bore on a 6.35 mm solid shaft with 8 mm of usable height and 7 mm insertion gives 7 mm engagement. A nominally similar press-fit knob remains a conflict if the spline is unknown or does not match.

The example demonstrates reasoning, not a universal setup specification. Substitute real measurements and repeat the final test before accepting the next action.

Assumptions and limitations

Nominal metric and imperial labels hide tolerances. Tapered, knurled, D-shaft, collet, proprietary, damaged, compressed, and molded interfaces may not follow this simplified comparison; do not force a knob.

Instrument design, service history, measurement error, and player technique can outweigh a calculator or checklist. Where manufacturer instructions exist for the exact hardware, use those instructions and record the revision consulted.

Safety and stop conditions

Stop for abnormal resistance, cracking, heat, odor, electrical sensation, moving wood or joints, a measurement that cannot be repeated, or any step that would remove material without a confirmed cause. Secure strings and stored mechanical energy before hardware work. Refer structural, fret-cutting, mains-powered, or uncertain repairs to a qualified technician.
