What this tool is for

Convert string height between millimetres and common inch fractions. Measurement tools are useful only when the physical datum, unit, fret or position, instrument posture, and instrument state are recorded with the number.

Method and logic

The converter applies exact inch–millimetre conversion, with one inch equal to 25.4 mm, then reports nearby common fractions for communication.

The page keeps calculation and diagnostic claims deliberately bounded. Display rounding improves readability, while the underlying logic uses entered values; descriptive branches report relative tendencies and the evidence needed to confirm them.

Worked example

An action of 1.6 mm equals about 0.0630 inch, close to 4/64 inch. Record 1.6 mm as the measured value; the nearby fraction is a readable comparison, not extra precision.

Assumptions and limitations

Conversion does not correct parallax, string deflection, fret wear, or differing measurement locations. It also does not determine whether an action value is appropriate for a player.

Instrument design, service history, measurement error, and player technique can outweigh a calculator or checklist. Where manufacturer instructions exist for the exact hardware, use those instructions and record the revision consulted.

Safety and stop conditions

Stop for abnormal resistance, cracking, heat, odor, electrical sensation, moving wood or joints, a measurement that cannot be repeated, or any step that would remove material without a confirmed cause.
