Estimate a practical gauge direction for a tuning change without inventing brand tension data. Measurement tools are useful only when the physical datum, unit, fret or position, instrument posture, and instrument state are recorded with the number.
Use it when you can describe the current state and need a defensible next check. It is not a shortcut around inspection: preserve the starting state, change one variable, and verify the result under the same conditions.
Start from a string set whose feel you know. Enter scale and semitone change for the string being evaluated, then state whether the goal is similar, firmer, or looser feel.

Dropping one whole step is −2 semitones; frequency becomes about 0.891 of the original and same-string tension about 0.794. A slightly heavier candidate may restore feel, but published unit weight is needed for an exact match.

Gauge-to-unit-weight relationships are not universal, especially across wound, coated, flatwound, and different core designs. The selector cannot predict tone, stiffness, or safe nut-slot width.
Instrument design, service history, measurement error, and player technique can outweigh a calculator or checklist. Where manufacturer instructions exist for the exact hardware, use those instructions and record the revision consulted.
Stop for abnormal resistance, cracking, heat, odor, electrical sensation, moving wood or joints, a measurement that cannot be repeated, or any step that would remove material without a confirmed cause.
